Baby Showers

Don't you just love baby showers? What could be better than getting together with a bunch of friends to celebrate a new person coming into the world? All of them are so great. Doesn't matter if it's a formal Ladies Tea or a relaxed couples event. It's all a joy.

Recently, I began planning a shower for a dear friend and so many questions came to mind. Here is a small sample:

  • Theme or no theme?
  • Ladies only affair, guys and gals, kid friendly?
  • How many guests?
  • Cake or cupcakes?
  • Paper invitation or Evite?
  • Is there a registry (whether or not to mention on invitation)?
  • Pool money for a big gift, all handmade gifts, gift certificate or anything else in particular that I should know?
  • Is the mommy-to-be/couple comfortable opening a pile of gifts in front of everyone?

At the end of the day it's always fun. Other than being a thoughtful host, what tips and ideas do you have about creating a successful event? What was great/memorable about your own shower? Post a comment below and you will be entered to win a gift certificate to Cowlicks! Yep that's right, one lucky poster will get a gift card for five (5) pre-paid haircuts for ages 0-10! As Always, Montana Parent promises to never share, sell, or spam your email.

Go green! Invite guests to either bring their hand me downs or buy used. So many baby items and clothing are barely used and it is such a waste to purchase more when there are perfectly good items out there!

I say Evites if you know most people are online, it saves on paper/stamps/time and I know I RSVP right away. You might get a better idea of how many people will be attending. I also like the idea of recycling baby stuff, I must have had at least 20 outfits that my daughter wore maybe once or twice that were in great shape.

Thanks for posting Angie! I agree with you about Evites. . . So super handy!

The other thing that I really wanted to express is that this is not about the shower I am hosting. Although, I am sure to take away a lot from the comments, I am more interested in learning about what great things a gal can do to make a shower great. And hoping that this can be a resource for other mamas.

The shower I'm hosting is going to be huge, non-traditional and more like a Welcome to the new small person, relaxing afternoon open house.

I am planning on a couple of silly games; like Toss a football into the cooler in the backyard, for the dudes, and a name poetry thing for the girls (non-girls are welcome in our game!)

I have also hired a sitter to wrangle the smalls, because I really cannot run the whole she-bang and tend to my kids demands at the same time.

What other great/memorable things have happened at your showers? Should I hire a singing telegram?

I love the idea of a time capsule to open late in babes life and I adore Mother Blessings!

I would definitely recommend a singing telegram, or a character to entertain children that goes along with your theme! There are many choices from "Entertaining Montana" - aka Cryssy's Characters. The business has grown to include decorative balloon bouquets and displays for events. You can see the all the creative possibilities at cryssyscharacters.com or call them at 587-1888.

Is Mother Blessings a cooler name for a baby shower that I haven't heard? I like it!

Fairy God Mother! Genius idea. We'll end up spending at least $10/hour on a sitter.

Mother Blessings are less about the gifts and more about the act of becoming a Mother. I have been to a few and they are absolutely beautiful. Each one is different with customs or activities to celebrate motherhood. Sometimes a bead is given by each attendee to make a bracelet for a focal point for birth. The ideas are endless.

Thanks Cindy. I had never heard that. What a lovely idea. The term caught my attention and I was thinking earlier that blessing is really what showers are all about. It's an opportunity to say all those great encouraging things to the new parents. I'll always remember being nervous, like most mommies, that something would come up and I wouldn't know what to do. A friend said, "you will know what to do for your baby." It was so simple but it resonated and helped me with my confidence. Nice.

The most fun "activity" I have done was at a baby shower for a little girl. We made hairbows and hairclips for the new baby. There was a table full of hot glue guns, bows, ribbons, etc....we had a blast creating and I know my friend has had fun using them with her little girl! We also did scrapbooking at one, and created pages for the baby book!

No Theme, Ladies only, cupcakes, 10 guests, I don't like registry, let them take back the gift and exchange it if they don't like it. I really like the pool money for something big they really want! Great idea and simple. No pile of gifts. I get uncomfortable opening in front of people. Some people are really great at it....not me.

I love evite but I think a lot of people don't get it. So I spend time on calls, emails and other things to make sure they know they have an evite. I am all for green but paper will get to them.

Thanks for the comments everyone! The Cowlicks Gift card goes to Cindy. (Yay Cindy! I'll send you an email.) Even though the gift card is gone, we welcome continued comments on this or any of our other posts.

All my best, bunnyfufu
